Important Dates

Deadline for submission: August 1, 2022 to August 28, 2022.
Award Announcement: The winners will be announced on the official website of the NUST and the OIA of NCHU by October 14, 2022.

Eligibility

International students (Degree-seeking & inbound exchange students) currently enrolled in the National University System of Taiwan (NUST).

Main Topic

The Beauty of Taiwan's Traditional Arts
The traditional arts of Taiwan, including Traditional Crafts, Parade Formation, Opera, Music, Dance, and Architectural Crafts, are all compatible with the lives of the people, and connect people from different generations with a sense of identity and resonance with the land. It is hoped that through the outstanding works students will learn about Taiwan's culture from different perspectives.
*You can have your own title for the work!

Competition Categories

Entries to the Competition: PhotographyShort VideoPostcard Design.
*Entrants can enter 3 competitions at the same time, but can only submit a maximum of 1 entry per competition.

Photography

I. Marking Criteria

  • Thematic context: The work demonstrates the cultural characteristics of Taiwan.
  • Composition: compositional expression, technique, light and shade, framing, etc.
  • Creativity: creative ideas, originality, characteristics, etc.
  • Creative concept: story background, cultural transmission, the concept of the work, etc.

II. Entry Specifications and Standards

  • A digital file must be provided and only 1 entry must be submitted.
  • Either color or black-and-white photos are acceptable. Either a portrait or landscape format is acceptable.
  • Format: a PDF, jpg, jpeg, or png file with a resolution of 300dpi (file size should be limited to 5MB or less). The size of the sheet must be at least 2400*3600 pixels in length and width.
  • For the file name of the work, please fill in the name of the author, the name of the work (within 10 words), and the name of the school in order, ex: authorname_workname_schoolname.
  • A text (50 words or less) describing the concept of the work is required.

Short Video

I. Marking Criteria

  • Storytelling: The ability of the content to convey a story without deviating from the theme.
  • Techniques of filming: Lighting, sound, music, visuals, etc.
  • Creativity: creative ideas, originality, characteristics, etc.

II. Entry Specifications and Standards

  • The maximum video duration is 180 seconds (within 3 minutes), including the beginning and the end.
  • It is forbidden to use multiple photos in a video. The content of the video must be presented in the form of a motion picture.
  • There is no limit to the type of tool or video used. Animation, digital audio and video are both acceptable.
  • Format: mp4, avi, or wmv.
  • At the beginning of the video, please show the title of the video and the name of the participant with subtitles, and the NUST logo at the end (Download HERE [1] or [2]. You can choose/edit any of them).
  • ENGLISH subtitles are required.
  • For the file name of the work, please fill in the name of the author, the name of the work (within 10 words), the name of the school, and file format in order, ex: authorname_workname_schoolname.wmv.
  • The video must NOT contain any copyrighted work(s) belonging to third parties, including the background music.
  • The content of the video must comply with the general classification of the "Film Classification Act" and must not violate public order or morality.

Postcard Design (Electric/Hand-drawn)

I. Marking Criteria

  • Thematic context: The work demonstrates the cultural characteristics of Taiwan.
  • Composition skills: compositional expressions, techniques, colors, etc.
  • Creativity: creative ideas, originality, characteristics, etc.
  • Creative concept: story background, cultural transmission, the concept of the work, etc.

II. Entry Specifications and Standards

  • A digital file must be provided and only 1 entry must be submitted.
  • This is not restricted to computer graphics or hand-drawn scanned files. The layout should be either portrait or landscape and designed mainly for the front of postcards.
  • Format: a PDF file with a resolution of 300dpi (file size should be limited to 5MB or less). The size of the artwork should be 150*107mm (148*105 mm after cutting).
  • For the file name of the work, please fill in the name of the author, the name of the work (within 10 words), and the name of the school in order, ex: authorname_workname_schoolname.
  • A text (50 words or less) describing the concept of the work is required.

 * All cash prize awards are before tax. The tax rate is 20% for those who have stayed in Taiwan for less than 183 days.

The General Terms of Participation

1. Entries must be works that have not been awarded in other competitions and have not been used for commercial purposes.

2. In case of data entry errors, inaccurate information, or files that do not conform to the format and specifications of the entry, the Organizer may send an email to the entrant for correction, and the entrant must reply and provide the information within 7 days. If the entrant fails to reply or cannot be contacted after the deadline, the organizer may decide that the entrant is disqualified.

3. Entries must be original works of authorship and must not be re-made, copied, synthesized, or plagiarized in any way that is contrary to social mores. Entrants are also obliged to ensure that their entries do not infringe on the trademarks, patents, copyright, and other relevant laws and regulations of third parties. If any breach of the rules is proven, the entrant will be disqualified and no other entrant will be eligible for the prize. If an entrant who has already received an award is found to be ineligible, the organizer may recover the original award. The entrant is responsible for any violation of the copyright law and related laws, not the organizer.

4. The copyright of the winning work and the digital files of the original work (in accordance with Chapter 3, Section 4 of the Copyright Act) shall be unconditionally transferred to the organizer from the date of the announcement of the award. The winner undertakes not to exercise his or her copyright in the work against the organizer. The organizer has the right to use the work in public (e.g. publicity, display, exhibition, publication in newspapers and magazines, web production, issuance, publication, sale of publications, or printing of books, etc.) without payment.

5. All successful entries are not to be returned, regardless of whether they win a prize or not (including those that do not match the specifications). If you wish to keep your original work, please reserve your work first or enter at your own discretion.

6. If the winner cannot be contacted or the entry does not reach a certain standard (to be decided by the jury), it will be deemed that the entrant is not eligible for the award and no other entrant will be substituted.
